Good theology vs. bad theology

August 22, 2025

“Theology” is one of those words that can make people’s eyes glaze over. It sounds academic, reserved for pastors, professors, or the “really serious” Christians. But here’s the truth: theology simply means the study of God. It’s opening His Word to know Him, to love Him, and to build our lives on who He really is.

Charles Spurgeon once said, “The proper study of a Christian is the Godhead. The highest science, the loftiest speculation, the mightiest philosophy, which can ever engage the attention of a child of God, is the name, the nature, the person, the work, the doings, and the existence of the great God whom he calls his Father.”

Theology isn’t for scholars only — it’s for all of us. The question isn’t whether you have theology. You do. The question is whether it’s good theology or bad theology.

Good Theology vs. Bad Theology

  • Good theology is biblical. It comes from God revealing Himself in His Word. It anchors us in His unchanging truth, reminding us that He is holy, loving, sovereign, and faithful.

  • Bad theology is when we imagine God in our own image — or when the world tries to sell us a god that isn’t real. It tells us He only wants us happy, that He would never let us suffer, or that He changes with the culture.

The antidote to bad theology isn’t clever arguments or new philosophies. It’s simply more of God’s Word. The Bible is where He has spoken and revealed Himself, and it’s there that our minds and hearts are transformed.

My Story: How Theology Changed Everything

Five years ago, if you had told me I would face stage IV endometriosis, surgery to remove my uterus, appendix, and fibroids, and a long recovery ahead, I would have spiraled. Out of my bad theology, I would have shaken my fist at God, doubted His love, and asked, “How could You let this happen?”

But this time was different.

Because of time in the Word, I knew Him. I’ve learned through our Philippians 4 study how not to be anxious. I’ve learned through our Jars of Clay study how to suffer well for His glory. Instead of bitterness, I saw blessings everywhere — His provision, His peace, His presence. I could even laugh and smile post-op because my joy was rooted not in circumstances, but in God Himself.

That’s the difference good theology makes. It transforms your everyday life — even in the wilderness of suffering.

Why Good Theology Matters in Everyday Life

Theology isn’t just for debates or dusty bookshelves. It shapes:

  • How you respond to trials. Will you run from God or run to Him?

  • How you view blessings. Do you take credit, or do you give thanks?

  • How you fight anxiety. Are you left to your own strength, or do you trust His promises?

What you believe about God changes everything.

3 Tips to Build Good Theology

  1. Get in the Word daily. Even 10–15 minutes can reshape how you think about God.

  2. Pay attention to influences. Acknowledge what books, shows, or voices are feeding you views of God that don’t align with Scripture.

  3. Learn how to study. Don’t just read quickly — learn tools to really study. Cross-referencing, word studies, and prayer all help you see God more clearly.

Where to Start

If you’re unsure where to begin, I’d love to invite you to try our free demo study or take our signature course, How to Study the Bible. These resources are designed to help you know God through His Word so your theology isn’t just head knowledge — it becomes a lifeline for your heart.

A Vision of Transformation

Imagine the difference: instead of crumbling under confusion or fear, you’re anchored in God’s unshakable character. Instead of questioning His love in hardship, you’re confident of His goodness in the storm. Instead of being swayed by the world’s false gods, you’re grounded in the One who never changes.

That’s what good theology does.

And good theology can be something you have.
